DAY 5 REVIEW

Day 5 shook Nagoya again. Kirishima — the last unbeaten man in the upper ranks, chasing yokozuna promotion — was thoroughly beaten by Hiratoumi, who had not won a bout all tournament. Driven back from the initial charge, the ozeki was pushed out with little resistance. That leaves no perfect records in the named ranks: the only unbeaten men in makuuchi are two rank-and-filers, Wakanosho and Shishi. Aonishiki, chasing a return to ozeki, impressively forced out ozeki Kotozakura, and young Fujinokawa kept his upper-rank rampage going by pulling down sekiwake Kotoshoho. The struggling yokozuna finally had a brighter day: Hoshoryu dispatched Gonoyama with a tottari arm bar, Onosato pushed out Churanoumi for a second straight win — and it was the first time this tournament that both yokozuna won on the same day. In the all-new-komusubi clash, Yoshinofuji forced out Oho, while Atamifuji handed Takanosho his first win of the basho. The title race now has Hoshoryu and Aonishiki at the front with Kirishima giving chase — five days in, and Nagoya still refuses to pick a favorite.
