Onosato pulled down Fujiryoga for 8-1, the only winning record in makuuchi so far. In the two-loss showdown Fujinokawa threw Kotozakura for 7-2; Kotozakura has lost two straight and is 6-3. Kirishima was pulled down by Daieisho for 5-4, his first back-to-back losses of the basho. Atamifuji forced down Takayasu for 7-2 and Aonishiki beat Yoshinofuji by scoop throw for 6-3; Hakunofuji forced out Kotoeiho for 3-6. Among the maegashira Minoumi pushed out Roga and Kinbozan forced down Chiyoshoma, both 7-2, while Asanoyama, Ura and Kotobukinofuji lost — to Takanosho, Oshoma and Wakamotoharu — for a third defeat each. Shodai was pulled down by Tobizaru, ending his run at two. After nine days Onosato leads at 8-1, four men are 7-2 (Atamifuji, Fujinokawa, Minoumi, Kinbozan) and nine are 6-3. In juryo Kagayaki won the battle of the unbeaten against Kayo for 9-0; in makushita Tenshozan and in sandanme Naya are both 5-0.
